A logo is the most important graphic for any brand. Your logo paves the way for the rest of your design and marketing strategy, and has the power to make or break you. Your logo is a way others identify (with) you and your brand. It is a reflection of who you are as a company and has the power to connect you to your market.
Some elements of a good logo include:
- positive associations
- clean, clear typography that reflects the nature and personality of your brand
- appropriate colour choices and treatments
- ability to maintain brand presence even in simplified black and white or one-colour applications
- ability to remain timeless
Major changes have taken place in the last few years that make it impeccable to keep up with the times if you want your business to succeed. As technology advances, the rate at which it advances is directly affected. With each year, an abundance of new ideas and technologies are offered to the world. More and more, faster and faster. It is very easy to feel lost with what to do next to propel your brand.

As society and technology evolves, so do people’s tastes and trends. Design is ephemeral. It is forever changing. When we see a logo that looks dated, we automatically tend to view the brand as not being up to date with current best practices. With how fast everything progresses today, it is a good idea to evaluate your logo and consider updating it every 5-6 years.
Not every client that comes in for a “brand re-design” requires a completely new logo. In fact, most businesses should first try a logo update before scrapping it altogether. A logo update includes working with the existing logo to modernize it, clean it up and make it shiny and new again, without losing the established brand presence!
Some more reasons to consider updating your existing logo versus completely re-vamping it include:
Creating a logo from scratch takes a considerable more time and work than revamping an existing logos, and the price reflects that. Depending on the work required, the price is usually at least half to a quarter of what it costs to design a completely new logo.
Recognizability & Memorability
These two concepts go hand-in-hand. Logo and brand recognition should not be taken for granted. It is built through years of hard work and reputation. Instant recognition and memorability is not easily gained. Therefore, if your clients and other people already know your logo and associate it with your brand, the best thing to do is present them with a better version of what they are familiar with. This will psychologically create a greater sense of bond between the company and it’s existing market base. Strategies like this make people feel like they are a part of your brand’s growth and evolution.
Creates Interest & Talk Around Your Brand
Time to time, even major brands need to update their logos. What was once modern and effective can lose it’s power over the years. If your brand has evolved, your logo may no longer reflect what you do. An updated logo creates a stir around your brand, attracting interest and allowing for an opportunity to quickly communicate your brand’s evolution.
Keeping your company’s logo fresh and relevant is vital to branding success. Even “timeless” logos sometimes have a lifespan (usually 10-15 years). Whether it’s a company name change, new acquisition of skills, a new niche that has been created or any other list of reasons, checking in with your logo time to time is a good habit to get into.
